Manitoulin Island – Nestled in the heart of the Great Lakes, Manitoulin Island is an island like no other, an island for all you nature lovers or those that enjoy a lazy day on the beach. This is Ontario’s hidden gem and a slice of heaven for all those wishing to visit Manitoulin Island. They say, half the fun is in the journey and this couldn’t be truer for Manitoulin Island. There are so many things to do in Manitoulin Island – for kids and for adults! In this post, you will find what to do on Manitoulin Island.

Manitoulin Island is home to some of the friendliest people on the planet. Those that live on the island, strongly believe in one thing – Fresh Air + Fresh Water + Fresh Food. You can feel this mantra in the air as soon as you step foot on the island. The laid-back nature of the locals will take you back in time. A time when stories were told around the campfire and meals were cooked with fresh local ingredients. The island is locally known in Ojibway as ‘Spirit Island’.

I bet, half of those that live in Ontario, Canada do not know where these islands are located on the map. This island is on Lake Huron and is considered the largest lake island in the world. The island has over 100 lakes in itself and has a historic Anishinaabe and European Settlement on the Island. There are an astonishing 108 freshwater lakes in Manitoulin Island, some of which have their own islands. 

Ways to get to Manitoulin Island

There are two ways to get to Manitoulin Island:

  1. Manitoulin Island Ferry – A 2 hour ferry from Tobermory takes you to the beautiful Manitoulin Islands. The Chi-Cheemaun ferry most only transports you across Lake Huron, it also has the capacity to take your car or RV across the lake. You do need reservations in advance so if visiting the island is on the agenda, make sure you book your time well in advance. If you are planning to take the ferry, you will pass through the Bruce Peninsula. The Peninsula is so gorgeous with numerous stunning hikes and views.   2. You can drive around Lake Huron and get to Manitoulin Island from Sudbury. This route is great for those coming from the East end and no reservations are required in advance. When driving this route, you enter the island from Little Current – the biggest town in Manitoulin Island. The drive time is almost the same if you were to take the Ferry, but, again, the ferry crossing comes with spectacular views that visually takes you to the Caribbean Islands.

The island experiences a humid continental climate. Similar to Toronto, the winters are cold and the summers are hot. Do you know, Manitoulin Island has one of the biggest Dark Sky Preserves of Ontario? This means you can view Northern Lights from here as well as see the Milky Way on a clear night.

There are resorts in Manitoulin Island, there are cottages in Manitoulin Island, there are lodges on Manitoulin Island, there are hotels on Manitoulin Island, but the most preferred is camping on Manitoulin Island.

  1. Resorts and cottages in Manitoulin IslandManitoulin Resort is located on the beautiful shores of Lake Manitou. With beautiful sunrises and sunsets right from the resort, you are in for a treat at this resort. There are multiple cottage options depending on family size and all amenities are available right on the resort. There is a RV park and there is camping spots available at Manitoulin Resort as well. This resort is truly a one-stop-shop. The resort fills up well in advance so make sure you book as soon as you have your dates to visit Manitoulin Island. 
  2. Lodges in Manitoulin Island: There are multiple lodges on Manitoulin Island. Again, if you are planning to visit, make sure you book them in advance. Everything on the island is booked well in advance!
  3. Camping on Manitoulin Island: This option is extremely famous while visiting Manitoulin Island. Camp grounds are spread across the island but the most preferred one is at Manitoulin Resort – reason being all amenities are close by! Another famous spot is the Gordon’s Park – they have two campgrounds with a variety of places to stay at. If you are driving through the Bruce Peninsula and want to camp along the way, here are three best campgrounds in Tobermory. 

Things to do in Manitoulin Island

As I said, Manitoulin Island is paradise for nature lovers. From beautiful waterfalls to fantastic hiking trails and spectacular views, this island is sure to please those that love to spend time outdoors. 

Here are 10 things to do on Manitoulin Island:

  1. Cup and Saucer Trail: This trail will take you approximate 2.5 hrs to hike. The views are breathtaking and worth the hike. We hiked this trail with our girls when they were 2 and 4 years old. It was challenging for them but nothing a ton of snacks and bribes wouldn’t solve! The trail increases in elevation and there are areas where you will be walking on rough terrain. 
  2. Bridal Veil Falls: Stairs from the main parking lot lead down to the waterfalls. You can go in for a dip or walk on the rocks along the water, these waterfalls are refreshing and fun for the family. You can even walk behind the falls.
  3. Providence Bay Beach: Think about a beautiful, sandy beach with blue water. This is Providence Bay Beach. The boardwalk kissing the water will take you along the long beach and the fish and chips is to die for!
  4. East Bluff lookout: From this lookout, you can get a good look of Gore Bay and the town as well. For those that do not wish to hike, this is for you! You can drive right up to the first lookout point or hike the trail close by to the second lookout point.
  5. The Old Mill Heritage Center: This one is a hidden gem – one that is not advertised anywhere but a must visit on Manitoulin Island. Admission is by donation and although it is a small space, it is packed with a lot! You will find information on the history of the area dating back to wartimes. 
  6. Farmer’s market in Kagawong: Who does not love a farmer’s market? From fresh produce to local vendors, this market will please you in every which way. 
  7. South Baymouth Range Lighthouse: If you take the ferry across Lake Huron, you will dock at South Baymouth. This area houses the lighthouse and you can walk to it or explore at your own pace. 
  8. Water activities: Manitoulin Island is packed with water activities. From canoeing to kayaking to fishing, there is something for everyone. Canoe on the lake during sunset and it will be one you will never forget. 
  9. Point Grondine: A First Nation owned and operated recreational park, Point Grondine has over 18,000 acres of scenic natural wilderness landscape, old growth pine forest, stunning river vistas and six interior lakes to explore. 
  10. Enjoy a unique experience: Manitoulin Island is known for its rich Aboriginal culture. The Great Spirit Circle Trail allows you to experience Manitoulin Island from an authentic Aboriginal perspective.

Bonus: Drive across the iconic swing bridge: The iconic Swing Bridge at Little Current was originally built for use by the railway, but in the 1940’s it began to be used by public traffic. The bridge spans the North Channel between mainland Ontario and Manitoulin Island.

Manitoulin Island is extremely rich in culture. 40.6% of the population on the island is Indigenous communities. There is so much to do, see and learn on the island. Rich in history, one might feel quaint and satisfied after a visit to the island. Manitoulin Island is accessible year-round from. The Chi-Cheemaun ferry only runs from late May to early October but the island is accessible from Little Current at all times.

If you are debating if this island is worth a visit, you must visit it! From boating to sightseeing to hiking to fishing, there are activities packed on the island. There are even archeological sites dating back to 10,000 BC that were discovered in 1952. Rich in indigenous culture, history and tradition, do not miss watching a Pow Wow. 

Two incorporated municipalities, eight townships and six Anishinaabe communities make up Manitoulin Island.
