This blog is a continuation of our honeymoon in Costa Rica. You can read part 1 by clicking here. After a week of relaxing on the beach and sipping cocktails by the poolside at the beautiful Dreams Las Mareas, we were ready for some adventure. Taking the AC coach from the Liberia bus terminal to San Jose was an excellent decision because we got to drive through the countryside and every bit of it was breathtakingly beautiful. Having been to San Jose before, as soon as we reached the bus terminal, I took lead. We kept walking while looking for a taxi up until Rohan pointed out that we were actually walking on the highway. Well that was the end of me taking the lead, at least for the day! So hope you enjoy reading our honeymoon in Costa Rica – Part 2.
Where we stayed
We stayed in the heart of the city at the Barceló San Jose to be close to the downtown area! San Jose has a wide array of activities to offer – with a happening nightlife, a delicious spread of food and some of the warmest people we have met, this city was truly mesmerizing.
La Paz Waterfall Garden
We visited the La Paz waterfall gardens and had a chance to visit all five of the waterfalls that reside in these beautiful gardens. We hiked to all these falls and got to view some of the prettiest spots through our strolls. I absolutely love toucans and how colourful, bright and beautiful these birds are. We had a chance to feed them and take lots of pictures that definitely made my day.
Another favourite of mine was the hummingbird garden! Surrounded by 100s of these tiny creatures was truly such an enchanting feeling. These gardens are also home to some marvellous rain forests, cloud forests and many types of big cats. There is a lunch buffet with delicious local and international delicacies. This eco park comprises of many other attractions that can easily take you a day to explore. This was one of our best day trips from San Jose and we got to see all that Costa Rica is famous for through these waterfall gardens.
Visiting a coffee plantation
Another fun trip we did was to a coffee plantation. Rohan and I are coffee drinkers and it was mandatory for us to check out a plantation. Costa Rica is worldly famous for its coffee and the trip to Doka estate gave us a chance to understand and walk through the coffee making process! We actually picked up a few packets of coffee beans to bring back with us and also to gift our family who truly appreciated the rich coffee.
In addition to coffee, they also sold these delicious coffee candies. Each candy came with a roasted coffee bean wrapped in a rich chocolate. Lucky for us, the Dream Las Mareas always stocked these candies in our room and we got to eat them the entire 7 days we were there. You can read more about the estate by Clicking Here.
We also took an aerial cart through one of the luscious rainforests of Costa Rica. This was a great experience to really understand the flora and fauna of these rainforests. We discovered the plant and animal species that resided in these rainforests through a guided tour along with understanding the importance of each of these species and what makes these rainforests truly unique.
Things we did
The month of December is always buzzing with carnivals and street acts performed by various artisans in this capital city. We got to witness one such carnival hosted by the city! This was our first time seeing a bullring – even though the tickets for the bullfights were sold out, it was pretty exciting to see the ring.
We also got to try some delicious local delicacies at the food stalls and some of these vendors had the most amazing street foods we have eaten during that entire trip. The cherry on the cake was a night when we were wandering the city and literally stumbled upon a parade that was organized by the different states of Costa Rica that showcased their local regional talents through dance and drama. This was a spectacular sight and it felt like the entire city was poured on those streets that night and every single person was having a great time. We also saw another parade during the daytime that comprised of policemen, soldiers and all the beauty pageant winners from Costa Rica. The city was mystical during Christmas and we got a chance to really take in the culture of the country through these spectacles we staggered upon.
Our entire trip to Costa Rica was a cocktail of leisure, comfort and adventure. Even though we did not get a chance to visit some of the enchanted places that Costa Rica has to offer, this is reason enough for us to visit this beautiful country again with our girls. Costa Rica is extremely kid friendly and I can’t wait to take the girls there someday and show them the true beauty of this country.
I hope you enjoyed reading our Costa Rica series specially our honeymoon in Costa Rica – Part 2!
