Exploring Greig’s Cave in the Bruce Peninsula

Have you been dying to visit and explore some caves? Do you know there are a couple of caves right here in the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario? A few hours’ drive from Toronto, brings you into the beautiful Bruce Peninsula. The peninsula is famous for so many things – gorgeous sunsets on the shores of Lake Huron, the turquoise blue water in Tobermoryflowerpot island, shipwrecks, grotto, Lion’s Head lookout, etc!

The grotto are the most famous caves in the Bruce Peninsula and you need to pre-book well in advance. But, if you do not have a booking and are looking to visit some caves on a whim or if you are even looking to REALLY see some caves, you are in for a treat! I am going to share some information on exploring Greig’s Cave in the Bruce Peninsula.

What is Greig’s Cave?

The history of these caves is so interesting to read. Do you know around 400 million years ago, the Greig’s Caves looked a lot like the present-day Great Barrier Reef of Australia? Yup, you read that right! It was covered by a shallow tropical sea. When this sea began to dry up, the minerals dissolved in it became more and more concentrated. Read more about the Greig’s Cave by clicking here. Another interesting face is that two movies have been shot at Greig’s Cave. Quest for Fire released in 1981 and Against the Wild in 2013 were shot here.

Where are Greig’s Caves located?

Greig’s Cave is in Lion’s Head, and they are quite close to the Lion’s Head lookout hike. If you are travelling with kids, do not try to combine the two hikes in one day. Although the Lion’s Head hike is much longer than the one at Greig’s Cave, the latter is more challenging for kids.

Exploring Greig’s Cave in the Bruce Peninsula – things to know:

You do not need to pre-book to visit the caves. The caves are located on a private property and there is a fee to get inside. Adults pay 15$, children 3-12 pay 7.50$ and its cash only. Pets are not allowed on this trail and this trail is defined as moderately difficult. The caves are open from 9am-6pm with the last entrance time for 5pm. Rain or shine, the caves are open and remember you will be asked to sign a legal waiver to enter the caves.

Types of trails at the Greig’s Caves:

There are two trails once you enter the area. The cave trail loop is marked with red arrows. The walkway is covered with wood chips, and this makes it so much easier to a) make sure you are on the right route b) prevent from slipping on those rocks when climbing up or down. This trail will take you anywhere from 45-90 minutes depending on how much time you spend at the caves.

The scenic lookout trail is market with blue arrows and the loop will take you around 15 minutes. There are 3 look out stops on this trail and it’s a quick and easy one.

Last thoughts on our visit to the Greig’s Caves!

This was our first time exploring the Greig’s Cave in the Bruce Peninsula and we absolutely loved it. There are so many local places we want to explore this summer, but we hope to visit Greig’s Cave again. If you are visiting the Bruce Peninsula, try to set aside some time to visit the caves. They are absolutely worth the hype and the entrance fee!

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us!
